Summer 2023 Online Faculty Workshop

Interested in adding data science to STEM topics at your school?

Apply to participate in our DIFUSE Faculty Workshop

July 10 & 11, 2023

1-4:30 PM ET

The workshop will be held remotely online

Join colleagues from other colleges and universities for an introduction to basic data science "module" design and deployment for teaching entry-level STEM classes. Participants will work through existing modules as well as brainstorm new modules to be collaboratively developed over the 2023-24 academic year.

Please join us for our Summer 2023 Faculty Workshop!

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the workshop take place?

The workshop will be held on July 10th and 11th, from 1:00-4:30 pm ET

Will this workshop be offered remotely or in person?

The workshop will be entirely remote over Zoom

What can I expect while participating in the workshop?

Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to engage with modules that DIFUSE has developed in the past and brainstorm new module ideas through guided sessions and interactive group discussions.

What is the time commitment?

The time commitment scales based on the level of participation. The workshop itself consists of two synchronous, consecutive afternoons, from 1:00pm to 4:30pm.  We will ask you to do some review of our current modules before the workshop and imagine you will have some things to think about afterwards.

After completing the workshop, if you would like to utilize an existing module in your classroom, you may spend additional time with the DIFUSE team working on deployment and assessment.

If you have a module idea that you would like DIFUSE to develop for your classroom, you would work closely with the team for about a ten week period, meeting for approximately an hour each week to work on building the module and then deploy the module in your classroom, and provide assessment data back to the DIFUSE team.

What is the stipend associated with each level of engagement?

Tier 1: Attend the synchronous workshop, totaling seven hours over two afternoons. (Stipend $750)

After attending the synchronous workshop, you may participate in one or both of the following during the 2023-2024 academic year:

Tier 2: In addition to attending the synchronous workshop, deploy an existing Dartmouth DIFUSE module in your classroom in collaboration with the DIFUSE team and provide assessment data. (Additional Stipend $750)

Tier 3: In addition to attending the synchronous workshop, collaborate with the DIFUSE team to create a new module for use in your classroom. Deploy the module and provide assessment data. (Additional Stipend $1250)

Who is the ideal participant in this workshop?

We encourage current and future college faculty to apply. PhD students and postdoctoral fellows are welcome. The ideal participant will teach (or soon teach) an introductory course in a STEM or Social Science discipline. The participant does not need a data science background, as DIFUSE aims to introduce data science concepts into courses that do not have an existing data science component already.

Potential faculty disciplines could include but are not limited to:

Mathematics

Biology

Physics

Chemistry

Sociology

Anthropology

Engineering

Psychology

Geography

Environmental Studies

Earth Sciences

How could a DIFUSE module be incorporated into my course?

DIFUSE has created modules in several areas of STEM and the Social Sciences. Past modules have tasked students with collecting data, analyzing data, visualizing data, or some combination. Instructors have based DIFUSE modules around current world events relating to their course subjects, previously published papers, and field-specific data collection methods.

Participants need not have an exact idea for a module going in, as the DIFUSE team will work with the participant to accomplish a learning goal or express a relevant concept to students through various data analysis methods.

Past DIFUSE modules have used data visualization methods such as interactive maps, word clouds, linear regressions, and graphs generated in programs such as Matlab in order to provide students with an interactive experience in data science. Others have involved the use of various programming languages in order for students to perform their own analyses. For modules involving more coding, the DIFUSE team has provided tutorials for instructors to distribute to students in the past.

What is the process for participating?

If you are interested in participating,

  1. Fill out the application form for one of the Workshops by May 15, 2023

  2. Selected participants for the Workshops on a rolling basis.

  3. We have spots for 15 participants in the workshop (first come/first served)

  4. After the workshop, participants will be given an opportunity to apply for Tier II and/or Tier III.
